forever in blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood

Lena

Lena is taking an extra painting class in the summer at RISD and becomes exceedingly interested in the anonymous painter who comes in late on the first day. After stalling outside of the doorway once the class ended, Lena sees that it is Leo, one of the most acclaimed artists at the college, and is tempted to look at his progress on his painting. After sneaking in early on a different day Lena spies his art and is overcome by his skill level. Leo sees her examining his work and they cultivate a relationship. One day Lena is invited to eat with him and his mother in their loft, and his mother proposes to them that they pose for each other's figure paintings, leaving Lena flustered. However, she agrees and Leo and Lena pose for each other. Lena's extreme shyness and her saying "I'm Greek" while posing for Leo means that she isn't quite able to draw Leo the way she wants to. Leo, however, sees extreme beauty in Lena's body, and he asks her to pose for another one. Lena starts developing feelings for Leo. However, shortly following the incident, Kostos makes another appearance at Rhode Island and tells her that he got a divorce with his wife, leaving Lena flustered and confused. She then becomes angry and confronts Kostos causing Kostos to leave the next day. She poses emotionlessly for Leo, thereafter. After a kiss initiated by Leo, the two of them end up in his bed together, having sex. Aftermath, she goes to her apartment and cries, realizing that she never felt for Leo the feelings that she felt for Kostos. When she goes to Greece, she met up with Kostos and realized that Kostos gave up a lot for her, even buying a ring for her. In the end, she realizes that she can't love anyone else. Lena and Kostos share a kiss at the end. Kostos heads back to London, but not before saying cryptically, "Someday" in Greek.

Tibby

Tibby returns back to her dorm at NYU after the dissolved meeting with two of the other members of the sisterhood to find that Brian, her long-term boyfriend from around nine months prior, waiting in her room for her. Several days pass and Brian reveals to her that he has successfully transferred to her college and will begin the new semester with her, at which point he produces a bottle of wine. After an evening of drinking, Tibby and Brian, both moderately drunk and content, then proceed to have sex. Shortly after, Tibby panics, because she considers that she might be pregnant when the cheap condom breaks. After, she finds out she is not pregnant with Brian's child, Tibby is still discontent with her relationship with Brian and breaks up with him. A while later, Effie, Lena's younger sister, confronts her and questions if a relationship between Effie and Brian would be all right with Tibby, to which she agrees, but soon feels exceedingly uncomfortable with it. After a while, Tibby realizes that she still has feelings for Brian. She meets Brian in "their" park and tells Brian how she still feels about him. Brian still feels the same way, and ends his relationship with Effie. Brian and Tibby soon resume their slightly modified relationship.

Bridget

Bridget feels slightly at odds with the idea of being "taken," and because of her somewhat brash and spontaneous decision-making attitude, she decides to take a trip to Turkey to help with an archaeological dig along with several classmates from Brown. Since Eric, her boyfriend, has made the decision to coach in a soccer camp in Mexico and Bridget has no intention of sitting around and waiting for him to come back. Bridget meets a handsome professor in Turkey to whom she is wildly attracted, and he to her. However, he is unattainable as he is married with children. Despite his marital status, the two share a kiss. He tells her that he has a "monstrous attraction" to her. The professor's family makes a surprise visit to celebrate his thirtieth birthday, and Bridget, seeing this, realizes that she can't carry on the fling with her professor. This is because she knows that she would be ruining the one thing that she wants: a family. She realizes it is time for her to grow up and mature. She also realizes that she is becoming the person she'll be for the rest of her life; she doesn't want to be like this. Upon returning home, she tries to piece her family's life together. She tries to become closer to her twin brother, Perry, but doesn't want to pressure him. Eric calls her and suprises her with his arrival. Eric stays the night as he missed her and the two make love. After Eric leaves the next morning, she begins looking through old boxed up memories in her basement and finds mementoes of her mother and her younger self. She realizes that her father does care because he has taken the time to save these things. She comes to terms with who her family is, and knows they do have something to give.

Carmen

Carmen, after a year of social transparency at her new college and a self-proclaimed loss of identity, has maintained only one new friendship and because of her is pulled into attending a summer drama program at college. Her new friend is Julia, the resident Drama Diva of the freshman year at Williams, one of the few freshman widely known in the social standings. Julia is glamorous, sophisticated, exuberant, and popular -- the very antithesis of the new Carmen, and because of that Carmen is pulled along behind her new companion as she forges the road ahead. Julia is in the spotlight and Carmen builds the sets. However, after having been talked into auditioning for a part in the plays performed, Carmen outshines all the other camp attendants and lands the coveted role in the largest of the performed plays (that of Perdita in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale) and Julia becomes immensely jealous while Carmen gains back her identity.

Summer's End

At the end of the summer, Effie, lovelorn and depressed at the loss of Brian to his original love, runs off to spend a week in Oia with her sister's friends' Pants, and while there, accidentally loses them. After the girls found out, they all head to Oia to find the pants themselves. They comment to each other that this is the first time in the whole summer that they were together. (Lena also repairs her relationship with Kostos in Oia.) After a couple more days, they decide to give up and forgive Effie. They realize that they were replacing real connections by simply passing the jeans around.
