We don't meet Will until The Subtle Knife. We find put he is an unsociable boy, but through no fault of his own. His mother has a strange illness, and his father is believed to be dead, or lost on one of his expeditions, so naturally, Will wants to draw as little attention to himself as possible.
Unfortunately, it is hard to keep a murder quiet, so Will has to flee. He escapes from his world through a mysterious window, into Cittagazze, where he meets Lyra Belaqua; who has also found her way into this world quite by accident. Together, with the aid of 'Æsthættr', a strange and wonderful knife; to which Will becomes the bearer, they set off to try and find Lyra's father, Lord Asriel.
Will and Lyra are helped along the way by many people, including witches, an armoured bear, and tiny spies who ride on dragonflies, called Gallevispians. Their journey not only takes them through many worlds, but also to the World of the Dead itself, where Will learns that he too has a dæmon, as Lyra does. Using the knife, he sets the dead free from millions of years of imprisonment and torment.
After a brief battle, Will and Lyra are reunited with their dæmons. They discover many things about life and themselves, but is it also here, in the peaceful world of the Mulefa, that they have to make the greatest sacrifice of all..
Will is the kind of person who prefers to be by himself, unnoticed. But when he has a task to do, he does it with all his strength, and does not back down. He stands true to his beliefs, and is even forced to kill a man at one point. Even so, through his experiences by himself and more importantly, together with Lyra, Will grows up. Will is "young, but very strong, and deeply stricken".
